Not exhaustive but some thoughts below!
Classic: Chanel Double Flap, Chanel Boy Bag, Saint Laurent Sac du Jour, Celine Luggage line, Celine Belt Bag, Dior Lady, Louis Vuitton Neverfull, Goyard St. Louis or Artois, Hermes Birkin/Kelly, Prada Galleria
Trendy: Gucci Marmont, Dior Saddle, Dior Book Tote, would argue anything padded right now by any brand (e.g., YSL Lou Lou, Bottega Padded Cassette, LV Coussin), any sort of exotic looking limited drop (e.g., Louis Vuitton Cruise 2021 collection), logo fanny packs/belt bags
In my opinion:
Classic
Bottega Veneta Mini Pouch
Chanel 19
Dior Diorama
Celine Belt Bag
Fendi Baguette
Louis Vuitton Capucines
Prada Re-Edition 2000 (certain colours/styles)
Trendy
Bottega Veneta Mini Jodie
Givenchy Antigona
Gucci Mormont
Louis Vuitton Multi-Pochette Accessoires
Prada Re-Edition 2005
Saint Laurent Kate
Rising Star
Classic/timeless: Birkin/Kelly (1980s), Chanel classic double flap (1955), Dior Lady (1995)—highest in resale too. IMO holy trinity
The more recent ones like YSL Sac du jour or Celine luggage/belt (2010s), or even more recent Gucci marmont/Dior saddle or tote bag/BV—I don’t consider classic/timeless. Some would argue LV is also timeless but they’re not classic to me personally. It boils down to me seeing them handed out to too many young ig influencers trying to be internet famous, they lost their luster. And this isn’t a boomer’s take, I’m mid 20s.
agree with this!
Here are the top 8 bags by resale value. I think they’re pretty representative of what’s classic from each of these brands

Agree with SA1 and EY1
I can show you a detailed page if you’re interested in a particular brand
Classics are bags that will stand the test of time and aren’t just trendy, like Hermes Birkin/Kelly & Chanel double flap. Trendy would be like Bottega pouch & Gucci Dionysus
Anything y’all would consider classic/timeless that is worth buying in the 1k-2k range? I don’t want to buy too trendy but also am not sure I’m ready for a 5k bag! Really appreciate these perspectives.

if you’re willing to go a bit more than 2k, I’d rec Chanel mini WOC or classic WOC (2.3-2.7k)
What do y’all think about boy bag versus double flap? I realllyyyy prefer the look of the boy bag!
DF will be a classic forever. Boy might get discontinued soon and therefore is not considered a classic. I love both my DF and Boy, but the Boy chain is very inconvenient (heavy and slides off). Would recommend DF right now since Boy is nearing the end of its era
