I was a recruiter for 15 years. Left in 2022 and there are not enough jobs for all the recruiters who are unemployed. Start thinking a coordinator role, hr shared services or onboarding. A huge pay cut but at least a paycheck and more stability. You can work your way up the ladder as needed.

This same scenario has repeated itself every decade or so. We saw this during the .com bust and again during the 2008 financial crisis. Ultimately, it's a natural and necessary thinning of the profession. That may sound harsh but isn't intended to be. Recruiting tends to be a bit feast or famine; companies hire us when they need us and drop us when they don't. Add to that the fact that there is zero barrier to entry to get into the role and you get a glut followed by a reduction.
Ultimately, it is true that there aren't enough recruiting jobs to hire back all the laid off recruiters and there won't be for some time. What I've seen many people do is take their transferrable skills and transition into other careers like sales, project management and customer success.
I hate to see any recruiter out of work who wants to build their life around this profession. However, in a down market, not everyone will get to stay in the game.
