Or because voter ID is a solution to a fake problem.
But I am so tired of hearing Republicans whine about voter ID I am willing to cosponsor a bipartisan bill that includes the election reforms voters want. It includes:
- making election day a national holiday
- making early voting available for two weeks
- automatic voter registration
- voter ID, free for everyone without a current ID
- same day registration at the polls
- mail in voting for everyone who wants it
- felons who served their time can vote

There were almost 50 million mail-in-votes cast in 2024 with roughly ~5 million notaries in the U.S. Banks offer free notaries to their customers only, not everyone works in an office, there’s a large swath of America that doesn’t live near a city and not every library offers notary services. It’s a known fact that notaries are concentrated in urban centers. There’s also the simple and yet overlooked fact that military members and U.S. citizens abroad obviously cannot find U.S. notaries abroad - and they are the ones that rely on mail-in voting.
These are all just simple-minded proposals without any real thinking into how it all gets inplemented. The only fraud we’ve seen in recent times is Trump telling election officials to find 11,000 votes.

this is a professional networking app. I think a case can be made that there shouldn’t even be a politics bowl at all. Let’s just be glad that we have a bowl where we can even discuss these topics/political discourse.
(I made a post saying the Melania movie hit number one on streaming and was reported because it was deemed “professionally irrelevant” 😑 , so even technically true things are pulled down by reporting Fishbowl users if they simply don’t like what they’re reading)
Most people don’t have an issue with requiring a photo ID. The problem is when you restrict the acceptable form of ID to essentially be a current U.S. passport for many - it now becomes what is essentially a poll tax. Passports are not cheap and take time to get.
Proposing legislation like this, specifically during an election year, comes off as performative and disingenuous.

Not to mention, they want to roll this out by the midterms. Has anything ever been implemented that fast? For all the comparison to getting on airplanes, it took 20+ years to get Real ID implemented.

From data from the Heritage Foundation, which is very conservative - the idea of widespread voter fraud is an absolute myth. Republicans can't win on policy, representing democratic values/principles and their base is dying/aging out, so rigging the rules of elections and suppressing turnout is what they are left with.

The last thing an undocumented immigrant is going to do is go and vote illegally in an election they know nothing about and which could get them arrested and thrown in jail or deported. It makes zero sense. Undocumented immigrants avoid interacting with state authorities; the last thing they wanna do is be deported after spending all the money and time it took to get here. But Trump loves the uneducated so these ridiculous myths will continue.
