What do you guys think about the riots in Philadelphia? In the video the guy is charging towards the police with a knife, This hardly seems like he was shot for no reason

Interesting points about the mental illness, I wasn’t aware of that

like

Before we get a little deeper I want to bring up the fact that this man was mentally ill. Doesn’t mean that the police officers lives weren’t actually in danger but I’m not sure if they were equipped to handle this situation in the first place.

like

Why was he shot instead of taxed, or beanbagged, or rubber bulleted. Why not use a dog? Dogs are crazy fast, can be taught to bite the arm, etc (though would certainly be an escalation if out).

If these officers have a gun, they seem inclined to use it as a first resort. If the officers didn’t have guns, I do wonder if the man would’ve done something different. If the officers weren’t called, this may well have resolved in its own.

Those are all Biden supporters showing how much they "care" for America via their rioting ways. The Democratic party is in shambles....

like

If the Democratic Party is in shambles, but republicans are not endorsing or actively avoiding linking themselves to their party leader (the President), that’s a good reminder that our politics overall is pretty screwed.

like

Apparently his mother was on scene trying to inform the officers that he had severe mental health issues..Idk much else

I would be interested in learning how countries with unarmed forces handle these issues without killing their citizens.

But, to start, I think if he just had to be shot then he should have been shot below the waist.

No, I didn’t learn that from CNN but I do realize I mixed up facts. I googled and I see that you’re right that they’re trained to shoot to kill and to shoot multiple times. I also saw that they’re rarely trained to de-escalate which was really concerning for me. Honestly, I didn’t know it was so bad.

With this new information, I think we should make it so that police officers are given extensive training on de-escalation included realistic simulations so they can experience what that looks and feels like in the moment or get damn close to it. I think there should be de-escalation tests before you can be on the streets and I think officers should continually be required to demonstrate this skill.

I also think officers should be given non lethal weapons so they have another option to protect themselves without resorting to killing citizens.

A1- You obviously do not know the first thing about shooting or anatomy. A knife within 21 ft of a person is more dangerous than a handgun. The person with a knife can dismember someone within 21 feet before the other person could draw their weapon.

Also shooting someone below the waist can kill them as well. Plus it can cripple them, cause lifetime of pain and suffering. I already know your response, “But at least they’re alive.” I feel bad for the person with mental illness, but their life doesn’t trump anyone else’s.

A2 - So you’re willing for the dog to potentially die? You’re also willing to risk the life of someone else to go unarmed to deescalate the situation?

You’re logic is so flawed. No life matters but the person having the episode? How many crisis counselors will need to die before you call that experiment failed? 1? 10? 100? Seriously?
