He made a comment to my assistant about things falling down her blouse (she was wearing something that showed her collar bones, but not cleavage) and he complimented my firm photo and my shoulders. Maybe I’m just sensitive and used to a more formal work environment, but he makes me feel icky.
You’re not being sensitive, that is weird.
Ew. I am so sorry.
I am so sorry to hear about the work environment, he sounds incredibly creepy and inappropriate! Not to avoid creepy colleagues, but then I want to look more conservative and covered up I will wear a looser fitting pant, crew neck sweater (can do a shell for warmer months) and layer a jacket/blazer on top. I feel like the jackets/blazers can help cover curves or items that could accentuate curves depending on the cut (maybe something along the lines of the J. Crew lady jacket styles, which can look cute open or closed) . I have longer hair and will sometimes put it into a very plain/not bouncy or swishy low ponytail. Hate that you have to change how you dress because he makes such an uncomfortable environment :(
Wear what you want and report to HR. Men no longer get passes for this kind of behavior.
I advise starting the plaintiff-side employment attorney search now. It can take some time to find a trusted advisor. That lawyer can advise behind the scenes on how to navigate this situation, or any other situation you may encounter at this firm.
This counsel has already shown himself to be a repeat offender and he likely has prior complaints against him, so you may want to more broadly evaluate the firm’s culture towards women. Do you see women in leadership in your practice group? Are affairs between partners and subordinates laughed off? Does the firm defend a lot of sexual harassers?
