My kids are at a center and it totally depends on the teachers. They’ve been in some classes we get pics and videos all day long. Others we get one or two a day, or a flurry during naptime.
One the one hand it’s nice, but on the other hand I’ve come to appreciate I’d rather the staff be focusing on the kids and not taking and posting pics throughout the day. Also may depend on class size whether we get individual or just group photos.
I have live stream video and love it. I get notification where she has wet diaper, oz of milk, food, activities with photos and video. My baby is only 6 months so this allow me to check on her ❤️
As a classroom teacher, I have to say it depends on the day, the group dynamic, how much planning time out of classrooms a teacher is provided, etc. my goal was to have daily communications and weekly, deeper dives into what I was seeing developmentally. It’s time consuming when you can have 14-20 children to post stories for, and to do it daily can certainly be time consuming, especially when we are trying to model less screen time.
We used to get 1-3 pics (rarely a video) the first half of the day, before the head supervisor teacher got off. She was amazing. App updates after she left—and care in general, really—kinda went downhill when she got off at 2pm. This was at a center-based care, a Goddard school
Almost never? My kids are at a small private daycare. We occasionally get pictures if it’s some sort of special event or they just happen to be doing something particularly cute. I love love love our daycare. Maybe even moreso because they’re low tech.
Documentation =/= good care. I’d rather they be focused on kids than pressured to update an app 5+ times a day for 10+ kids.
We get 1-6 photos that get posted during nap time (12-2). I like that they aren’t on their phones constantly and only post once nap time starts.
They are on their phones taking photos..
Ours usually does one or two in the morning then a bunch after school. Our last daycare would post after activity but that was about it.
Center based daycare and they don’t offer videos or photos on an app, but at the end of every week they give us an update on class activities & send out photos via email. I have also used other daycares for my other kids that did multiple photo updates a day. It’s more helpful when they’re younger but I don’t need it, I prefer they just focus on the kiddos instead of sending photos.
We have brightwheel too! My 1.5 year old we probably get 3-4 pictures a day. My 3.5 year old is usually 2 a day.
I just went and counted, out of curiosity. 95 pictures and 9 videos for the month of September (so far, 20 days). So an average of 4-5 pictures a day, and 2-3 videos a week. Not all of the pictures are of my son. Sometimes they’ll just send a picture of the book they read that day. And the videos are normally of their extracurricular classes (music, gym, etc.). So I think the teachers just have more bandwidth to take pictures when there is an extra teacher there for the specialty.
I will say my son is only 28 months old, and my older son also went to this daycare (center based). As my older son progressed through the program, we got less and less pictures/videos and updates in general. So just soaking it in now and appreciating all of the engagement, as I know it won’t last.
I also use the pictures to talk to my son when he gets home. If I saw he got to ride the bike on the playground that day, I’ll ask if he went to the playground and what he played with while he was out there.
When we were originally looking at daycares I thought I wanted one where there was a live stream video all day. I’m actually glad this one doesn’t because I probably would just watch him all day. We ended up choosing this daycare center because it’s in the plaza level of my husbands office building. So it gives me peace of mind that he’s close by if something happens. And it also forces my husband to do the drop offs/pickups.
We do center-based care (Bright Horizons). My son is in the toddler class, and we get 5-10 photos a day - both individual and group. Videos are rare. Similar to D1 - we get lots of photos in the morning before nap. In the afternoon we rarely get any photos.
Thank you everyone 🙏🏽 looks like I’m already getting more than what lot of people get here. One one hand I agree that I want teachers to focus on kiddos, on the other hand I feel so disconnected without seeing my little one’s activities during the day. Nanny is not an option for us due to working hours so I was hoping that the daycare updates will be more frequent.
Then tell your child’s caretakers! There’s no harm in politely asking for more photos.
We used to get daily photos when my daughter was in the infant class. Now as a toddler, if lucky, we 1 photo a week, usually on fridays. I’m ok with this since they are focused on the kiddos and not taking a bunch of photos

We used to get app updates on diapers, food, and naptimes, and sometimes other activities and a random pic or two. Earlier this year the daycare announced a policy change that they were going to stop the app updates in order to alleviate teacher distraction and allow more focus on the kids. I was disappointed, and I feel less connected without the info, but I do understand so I'm not mad about it.
No photos or app offered by our daycare in Santa Cruz. I’m fine with it and good without the distraction.
Both kids were in daycare around 9 months and we found that in the early classes, we’d see 3-5 pictures a day, but as the advanced through the class setup, it dropped a lot. Youngest is now in penultimate class (age 4) and we see 1 a day max (and frequently just the back of their head).
Family Daycare, licensed. They send pictures once a day at noon. pictures of morning activities and what they ate for lunch.
