I did a major change about 10 years in, from litigation to an unrelated transactional practice. I’ve been in my new area for about 4 years now. I would say it has been worth it in that spending the rest of my career in litigation wasn’t going to be sustainable for me, but on the flip side having to essentially start over both in terms of subject matter and seniority has been pretty rough. There’s also some concern that if you do get brought in more senior, you will lack the skills that a person of that same year would typically have. I suppose it depends on how big of a change you’d be making and what level you’d be hired in at.
Basically, networking and luck. I let friends know I was thinking about trying to switch and had conversations with others who had switched from lit to ask about their experiences. Through that I was lucky to find an opening that was willing to take a “nontraditional” candidate.
It’s all about what you want, and if you’re OK with the downside. I switched from BL lit to startup commercial counsel work. Going to bottom barrel salary was tough, but I’m a much more appealing IHC candidate now bc of my combined lit and transactional experience, so I like to think I have a high ceiling AND a much better QOL. Plus I really like the work I do now (never was a good fit for lit).
