Not work-related but just as ridiculous. I recently had a guy try to man-splain the marvel universe to me at a comic convention. I'm a huge marvel nerd and have usually done all the research necessary. He was shocked when I corrected him and explained a sequence better than he did. Felt so good!
Was the only woman in a fantasy rugby tournament in work. The guys in work saying how’s my “little team” I setup, as if I didn’t know any better than them about rugby…ended up winning first prize overall 😂 topped the rankings every week 😂
Ugh I hate when they act like that.
TBH I only have this one story, I've been generally lucky in this area, I think. But in my previous career I was working on securing a grant with a pressure who was the principal investigator (she was a woman) and I was the main person working on methods/design. For this specific grant we needed to have as part of the team someone from a very specific type of organization (a medical center), so we were working with a guy from such organization. What kept happening, that drove me CRAZY, was that I would pretty much write up all the research design, ALL of it, then send it to all the team for review. Then we'd set up meetings to discuss and refine. And every single time we met he would explain to me why it was designed that way. Although I wrote it and came up with the design. Every time.
This dude is the only person for whom I signed all our emails as "Doctor xxx" because he kept calling me by a diminutive of my name (that nobody calls me, it's not like it's my nickname). I really never use my title at all. For anything. Until this guy came.
I'm not sure if this qualifies as mansplaining, but I'm fairly new to the company and when I presented my findings and recommendations, the PM (who is male) insisted that we discuss with a Senior Engineer. However, the senior engineer was someone who started here two months before me, but just happened to be a man. Of course, he's my friend so he told the PM to listen to the recommendations, but still.
WOW. Can't say I am surprised.
I was told on a university open day looking at engineering courses (environmental) “you’d probably not be physically able to do the heavy machinery lifting work…but you could supervise with them building a wind turbine” (basically told I need to sit and watch the men do their job!! 🙈🙈🙈) I applied computer science instead lol 😂
WOW.
I appreciate you all, thank you for this 💖
