Took five days off. Came back to no meetings before 10am AND zero fires to put out. Regardless of what you think, your team can likely function a few days without you with the proper OOO plan. Take the time, get sane, work is not everything.

Omg, what ground breaking news!!!

You know that's how things goes in most companies around the world?

Just did the same - no fires to put out or meetings before 10am. I did, however, come back to realize all of the work I delegated did not get done AND there were no fires to put out. Meaning; my work really isn’t that important lol.

The team can function well till eternity without you actually, with or without an OOO plan

That was something my very first manager way back in the dark ages drummed into my head.

Ever since, I've always set up a bulletproof OOO coverage plan and in the decades since I've only been contacted twice while on PTO, and neither of those two times resulted in anything more than me being on the phone for 15 minutes. I haven't taken my laptop or work phone with me while on PTO in at least 10 years and it's been great.

I mean it’s Diwali. 99% of my team is off.

How much of a pay cut are you willing to take to (hopefully) re-find purpose in your job?

My Context: work in tech, company has HQ in the Bay but I live in Canada. Single, no kids, 1 mortgage, no debts.

TC: ~200k USD (60% base / 40% equity). I put very low effort, completely disengaged and unmotivated, with anxiety building up. Don’t like the company, but very few companies can match where I live

I’m being offered ~110k to work more, better title, fun project and company

I have an informational interview with a Managing Director on Friday about a manager role. I currently serve in a client services role and do not have traditional consulting experience (billable hours, etc.). Additionally, while I’ve worked with McKinsey, Accenture, McKesson, and other teams on major projects, I don’t have experience putting together the strategy, more of a support function. Feeling a tad intimidated! Any tips would be so very appreciated!
