Whoah EY1.... I hope I have the freedom to decide after having a child if I want to go back to work or if I can stay home with him/her for longer without worrying about my company squeezing every last cent from me. Or about jerks like you calling me scum
Also, congrats OP! :)
Ey1. Shut it.
Maternity leave is no vacation!
How is it any different than PTO? If you leave and have PTO accrued and not used before leaving, the company will pay it out to you because it is a benefit you have worked for and earned. Parental leave is also a benefit you've worked for and earned. They don't pay it out because it would make assumptions about who would or wouldn't have a family, so take advantage of it before you leave. Not that OP has this plan in mind, but there is absolutely nothing unethical about weighing and taking advantage of the options.
EY1 please shut up
EY1- if you had to take non maternity leave (and BTW, I never have), would you pay it back? What if you needed it and couldn't pay it back? I don't think OP had a kid just to scam money off the company and be a bottom feeder. Maybe she wanted to be a mom???
She didn't say she was leaving. She just asked the question to evaluate her options- like any good consultant would do. OP, I tried part time for a year after kid #1. It's another option....
EY1, OP can decide to do what she wants with her benefits...or quite frankly her life. Why do you even care about what ACN employees do with their benefits? #pettywap
^you do you. Factually we work for these benefits it is the companies job to establish the boundaries. If OP follows the handbook given by the company. How do you call it unethical ?
EY1 what the fuck am I reading.
EY1 is still a child.
Of course not. Benefits aren't a bonus.
Wait so moms are bottom feeders now?
Wow, had no idea this question would spark so much debate. To clarify, I have no intent to quit but I do want to know my options like any good consultant. You never know what could happen after birth that might incline you to make life changes. To those saying of course you don't have to pay it back, you would be surprised about how terrible many policies are for women and there are many companies that require women to come back for at least a few months so they don't have to pay back benefits or risk losing their job. Imagine that, a new mom still healing from a major surgery being forced to come back before she and baby are ready. Thirdly, I'm a second time mom and went back to work months later full time and kicked ass for the firm. Doubting moms about their ill intentions and calling them scum bags does not encourage them being a contributing, working parent. I really hope EY1 doesn't work in HR. Finally, maternity leave is not a vacation (ask any new mom about the first few months, it is ROUGH) and in my opinion should be considered PTO. Accenture used to have (paid?) sabbaticals after x years of service. Perhaps that would help non-parents with their needs too and have them return fulfilled and ready to work. Anyway, thanks FB for all the support and guidance. I'll keep digging.
@EY1 you're drunk. Go home
I wouldn't think so, but I do not know. Try digging for the Talent Compliance policies. Also, we have 1800-Deloitte where we can call someone in the middle of Tennessee to ask these sensitive questions. If you have something similar, you could also check there. Congrats in your baby!
No, but you should if you had any honor. I hate scum that quit after taking a benefit leave.
Sometimes you have to come back for a period to maintain the benefits. Need to ask.
Hopefully EY1 was just having a bad day and is not annoying and judgmental all the time
