Always be reading. Read widely, and pay attention to the stylistic choices the author is making. If you're not already familiar with them, read the work of the "New Journalists" of the 1960s, they really knew how to use the language. I'd recommend Joan Didion, Norah Ephron, Jimmy Breslin, Gay Talese, and Tom Wolfe for starters. They all had their own style, and someone can learn a lot about how to write from reading them. A bonus is that they're often wildly entertaining.
