Underwriter for 35 years and laid off in 2022. Lots of mixed feelings-not like it was my first layoff, after all it’s a norm for our industry. I was hurt more than anything as my boss knew I was just going to work for another 6 months, and I was one of the ones on her team that she relied on to cover for her. Oh well-it was a blessing in disguise. Enjoying retirement now. Lesson learned-don’t overestimate your employer’s loyalty.

Might have been out of their control? But I can definitely understand it does hurt. Sometimes companies only mean well when you are in a position to help them, when layoffs come around all bets really are now. Happy you are enjoying retirement now though!

I wonder if she maybe decided to lay you off specifically because you were about to retire anyway? It might be harder for someone who still heavily relies on a job to handle the financial stress of being laid off. No matter what the reason though, I know it still sucks. But happy retirement 🥳🥳🥳

I appreciate your perspective. I think it's a common attitude to think that loyalty to a company will be returned. But we see evidence all the time that loyalty usually just goes one way. In the end, we have to make sure we always have an alternative plan.

Sorry to hear that, but also thank you for the reminder that loyalty does not pay

I need some ideas for my last hour class. I teach reading only and I have this class first hour for reading and then last hour again for “communication skills”. I plan on some days doing prodigy, maybe passion projects, and maybe reading groups. This class has a lot of sped kids. By the time last hour comes, they are all over the place. I need things to keep them from going crazy, but want it to be purposeful also. Any suggestion?
