Excel spreadsheet to budget roughly by category. I don't track each transaction, I just want to know about how much I have to spend each month on major recurring expenses and typical monthly purchases. From there, I can identify a monthly savings amount. Then I set up automatic transfers to move that amount to my brokerage every month, and auto invest it. Anything leftover is for spending or saving for something fun.
I have needed a lot of straightforward financial advice in my life. I’ve come a long way and it always felt like I wasn’t actually getting ahead. Started taking a good hard look around at the finances and finally started to feel better about them. Saving should be a priority and having different funds for life.
I’ve focused on automating my savings - contributing to retirement accounts and setting aside a certain percentage each month for emergencies. The best part is I don't even have to think about it. I set it up once, and it just happens in the background. It feels like an effortless way to build up savings over time.
That's very good advice. And if you think about it, the best financial advice is often the simplest. I always remember the classic line from Poor Richard's Almanac: A penny saved is a penny earned. Whenever I want to spend money on something frivolous I remember that. That aphorism has worked for nearly 300 years, and here it is, working with me.
