What are some non-medical insurance options that most people don’t take advantage of? One of my coworkers broke her foot and talked about taking advantage of accident insurance and it got me thinking about other options out there that I may not be taking advantage of

I know FMLA is typically seen as a medical option, but you can take up to 12 weeks off for mental health, and if you have STD, those usually run concurrently. We also have legal insurance, and I’ve actually used it several times over the last seven years for speeding tickets—I definitely have a bit of a lead foot, haha.

Great tips! I had no idea. Thanks for sharing

Short-term disability or legal insurance. Both are offered through my work at a good discount. Peace of mind because you just never know!

This is great! I’ll have to look into the details for this one. I’ve heard the same about people using it for mat leave!

Recently bought a long term disability policy, the one offered through work was not enough should something happen that would stop me from working/providing. I never really thought about it before but I know of someone who got disabled and his income went down to like 20% of what it was and his wife had to find a second job adding significant stress over an already painful/scary situation.

Wow—thanks for sharing. Definitely something to keep in mind!

Not insurance but in a similar area, dependent care FSA. If you have a child who you pay for child care like day care or also an elderly relative you pay for care for you can have pre tax deductions and reimburse yourself for the cost of care up to 7,500 a year in 2026, was 5k in 2025.

Great tip! I didn’t realize it could be used for daycare

Additional Posts in Salaries in Finance

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.

I have an offer and want to negotiate

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

Is anybody here a notary? And how much are you making from that? Is it a potential side-hustle?

Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research. I’ve been with the company 8.5 years & am the only one in my role, which they can’t operate without. I execute tasks from two investment advisors and two financial planners - they make the decisions of what should happen & I make it happen.
