Also, is being called “Smart” in your performance review similar to being called “articulate?” Always has rubbed me the wrong way
So will answer your question first. I have and I deal with it up front or I distance myself from that person. Literally have had sit downs with directors and was like “this is not working so what should we do.” Didn’t get much from it and changed engagements. I don’t got time for micro aggression as it takes energy to navigate so I just call people out. Also a high performer so I honestly don’t give a shit cause they ain’t firing me and if if they do I have another firm wanting me back.
To your question on “smart”, I would need context. Why wouldn’t you want to be called smart or articulate?

The "for a black person" is implied. Nine times out of 10, those that day that are just showing us their expectations... thus, the prejudiced they brought into the conversation.
Sometimes I'll answer with a "I be a good talker!". If they're smart, they can start backtracking before I begin to wake them up.
1) My senior was talking crap about me via chat...in a passionate slip up she accidentally chatted me.
2) Had a manager call me aggressive. The partner who had diversity training tried to correct her, but she stuck to it. I'm far from aggressive fyi.
3) Completed a project early, moved on to another project, then updated workpapers were received for the previous project. Senior sent condescending feedback email "next time use the updated workpapers" as though they were available when I submitted the work.
4) Had a manager try to deny a Fri-Mon vaca (long weekend) stating that I need to give more notice (than 6 weeks). I specified I was only asking for Friday AND Monday. She was kind enough to tell me that I could work from home. 🙄😒
5) Had a different manager assume that I just wasn't completing work. I said when I checked before submitting, it was there. He didn't fully believe it until another team reported the same thing happening.
For all of these reasons, and many more, I will be going into business for myself soon.
