I've been using them this year and have in previous years. I know it doesn't guarantee independent reading but I think it encourages it. We are using a new reading program (lots of problems with it that I won't go into here) that has a good array of digital fiction and non-fiction texts. I also let them read whatever: magazine articles, news articles, graphic novels, whatever they like. We are fully remote. I post a new log every Monday to Google Classroom. I created a rubric attached to that assignment that assesses their ability to summarize the text. I taught and modeled that skill repeatedly and I am definitely seeing progress. Of course, you'll have some that don't follow the criteria or do it at all. But, that would be the case if remote or f2f.
Some teachers won't use logs, or any accountability with a rubric, but I find there's even less engagement when you do that.
