You’re not crazy. It’s not too much to ask kids to read, especially in a college prep school. We’ve definitely needed to scale down our curriculum in light of everything, but we shouldn’t be expected to “dumb down” our teaching or their learning. That would be an insult to both the teachers and the students. We’re reading a novel right now during remote learning. I know many of my students are not reading, but others are. Still others are at least listening to the read-alouds. And they’re enjoying it. I think of Michelangelo’s quote: “The greatest fear is not that we aim too high and miss it, but that we aim too low and achieve it.” I salute you for asking them to read! 🤗
