What days does your firm close for the holidays? Are you all working on January 2nd?

(I don't want to be a task master, but as an associate, I was expected to work a half day on the 24th, and a half day on the 31st. I'm closing the office 23rd and 26th this year, but currently listed as open on Jan. 2nd).

I will be open January 2. I was expected to work all of the 24th and the 31st as an associate. I don’t do that in my practice.

We have the 23&26 and 30&Jan2

Off the 2nd. Taking a little trip to NOLA. YAY!

Clients call on my cell 24/7 over the holidays with custody/parenting time problems. I get exhausted by the end & need the break. I feel like if I were an accountant, November-jan 1 would be my tax season, closely followed by May (start of summer vacation) & august (back to school). Taking a break after putting out all the fires, even a long weekend, doesn’t suck.

I am an unmarried working man in his 30s with a southern mother. In other words I'm flying home for Christmas and my mother just called to tell me that she just happened to accidentally run into the sweetest girl from her church that she just knows I'll get along with and accidentally invited her to our house for dinner the night that I get home. Deadass the woman will not rest until I am tied down. Pray for me!

How many of you have taken cases to your state court of last resort? My firm is taking a child welfare case to our state supreme court (not NY— so the actual last court.) I had a divorce mediation last week. The client wasn’t thrilled with the results (is anyone after mediation?) but we left with the two things she wanted: the house and her pension. She thanked me. My office sent the bill a few days later, and client wrote my boss a very long, angry email claiming I gave her incompetent representation. My boss backed me 100%, but I haven’t been practicing very long, so it really stung. Anyone have advice on dealing with self doubt in these situations?

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in this area of law, even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.

What are your client follow-up/communication policies or practices? I’m hearing more and more that clients don’t like the long periods of time with little to no contact. From my perspective, since I bill for my time, unless I have an update or need something, I don’t initiate a call. Also, clients hold on to important info and don’t initiate a call cause they’re waiting for me to communicate with them.
