Has your firm gone paperless? How did your firm transition to paperless (or mostly paperless)?

Painfully lol

We scan all incoming mail into a shared documents drive. Everything is organized in folders- by case then by pleading, correspondence, discovery, subpoena, etc. Makes it easy for everyone to access and find the documents. After being scanned in we shred paper documents. We also have this in our client agreement that files will be stored electronically and paper files will not be kept.

We are paperless. Our clients are often fee-conscious so we offer every single way they could possibly do production digitally and remind them it would be much cheaper for them to scan files themselves than have us do it.

In this position, my boss expects me to be a sale rep, costumer support, and account management. With everything I have to be available at all time, meeting a potential costumer in the morning and taking order in the evening till midnight. All this for 48k, it’s my first salary job for me. Am I supposed to work this much?

M fish, do any of you have recommendations for comfy athlesiure pants which are water resistant but also look good enough for wearing to a bar or restaurant? I like to be a minimalist packer and my vacations at this stage in life consist of some light hiking during the day followed by nice bars and restaurants so looking for a one stop solution I can wear for both. Looking to be ~$60 or less per pair. Thanks in advance!

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

Let's talk unhinged pro se opposing parties. We have one that emails the entire firm every few days with these SCREEDS that are like weird stream of consciousness accusations of baseless criminal and unethical conduct. So far there have been 2 emails already today. A GAL has been appointed and ordered to do a psych eval on this party, but is there any sense in responding in the mean time? Everything we say seems to get twisted.

What are examples of “non-billable” tasks that attorneys are completing? Backstory: I’ve seen firm softwares advertise their products saying, “You can’t bill for these tasks so you should have our software do it.” The task would be something like drafting a financial statement that is filed with the court. I would think that is billable.

New attorney here! Currently, I’m a child advocacy lawyer, but I want to get into family law (divorce, custody, etc.). I’m constantly advised to steer clear of family law; but is it really THAT bad??

Today I have officially made the decision to stop taking any and all cases that involve children. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted!! I just had to share with other professionals that understand. Yes, this will be a financial blow, but I’m fine with it.

How many of you have taken cases to your state court of last resort? My firm is taking a child welfare case to our state supreme court (not NY— so the actual last court.) Just curious about others’ experience(s). Very clear from the intermediate court that the panel didn’t bother to read the record on appeal. Very frustrating that my client’s last shot is discretionary when the trial court ignored my client and the one guaranteed appeal had a panel that couldn’t bother

Do partners in other small firms often communicate through a paralegal & task the associate with signing a motion/stipulation to modify allocation of parental responsibilities? My boss is out and the paralegal asked if he talked to me about signing a stop that he promised the client he would file today. For context, this is a client from before I started, I know nothing about the case, and I only interacted with the client in one call because the paralegal was out. Partner did all the substance

Is anyone here familiar with RSUs and stock options as part of divorce? My arbitrator was not and she asked us to hire an expert to get a valuation. She’s convinced I cannot take my portion in kind if we could not settle on the value and I don’t want to be forced to sell my half to Husband at whatever valuation expert provides today (RSUs and stock options are under Husband’s name). If they low ball I rather take the risk and take them in kind. Any advice would be helpful.
