I'm at a smaller MM bank. My original goal was to start here and hustle through into a BB, but I wasn't expecting to really like the people (my team, my direct seniors). I think the work we do probably wouldn't differ a crazy amount (we close deals, just smaller of course) and I'm wondering if I really have a reason to try to move into a bigger bank.

I had the same experience. At the junior level, BB will open more doors. I couldn’t get a single buy side interview from my old LMM shop. 9 months later, I have more interview requests than I can handle.

I don’t think I like the world of “high finance”, idk if that’s the proper term. I’m looking to get out and take a 40 he/week type job. If you like IB and see yourself in it during the long run, might be worth it to move to a BB.

like

For what it's worth, we have people move in from BB's at higher levels. Don't know if this genuinely means anything, but it was one of the reasons I joined to begin with because I thought it meant this bank/team had something to offer that the BBs couldn't

What are you looking for long term? If you’re paid similarly, like it where you are, and want to stay in IB long term, sticking around doesn’t sound like a bad idea. How are your hours? I like to think I work a lot but was recently on a deal across from a BB and those guys didn’t sleep. Doubt that’s representative but another risk / consideration of moving.

Long term, I enjoy IB work so anything similar is fair game to me.
But yes, I agree! Will admit I had some crazy weeks while on live deals especially since we have a lean team, but I have seen my MD consciously try to give us some down time (holding off on comments until after the long weekend to let us have time off, which is wild to me, never expected that in IB!)

If you don’t plan on sticking with IB, a more reputable bank will give you better exit opps for the rest of your career.

I'm open to staying in IB, it was actually my original goal but really open to anything with similar work (so PE would be fair game, and maybe some corp dev roles? Need to do more research on the latter)
But yeah, it's a fair point!

Interesting all the noise about these PPT, my take:

The pandemic took all the upside of an IB analyst life (client meetings in person, fancy trips, suit up, worshiped at networking events) and left all the juniors with the downside (long hours, monkey-like type of job, aggressive work environment).

Not that the complaints are not sort of legitimate but you may need to revise the decision-making process that led you to accept a return offer. Specially if you were looking for less hours.

I can really use some direction. My background, I've worked 2 years in strategy and am currently coming off an exhausting year 2 in investment banking. I didn't particularly enjoy either role and am not interested in moving over to the buy-side or some monotonous FP&A role. Everybody says there's exit-ops aplenty, but I find myself with less options and even more picky than I did as an ambitious T2 undergrad student. Where do I go from here?

I’m four months into my job and I got put onto a PIP. I worked so hard to break into IB, put up all the hours and even working 2am nights for weeks, learned a ton, and improved a lot along the way as the sole analyst yet this happens. I’m extra worried because it doesn’t seem there’s IB analyst positions out there. Im really hoping come January more positions come up but I’m just praying they don’t fire me until then.
