Anyone who does family law in addition to other practice areas, or who is thinking about transitioning out of family law:

What type of other practice areas or types of cases have you taken, and do you find alot of your family law skills transferrable or non transferrable?

General civil litigation, estate, and creditors rights.

Honestly, I despised family law, but it is a great place to sharpen your teeth in negotiating, litigating, drafting contracts, and managing client expectations. If you can guide someone through a messy divorce with custody issues, you can guide anyone through about anything (technical sufficiency notwithstanding).

that's encouraging!

Estate planning, bankruptcy, and contracts are what I'm doing more and more of. The firm I worked for previously had me doing mostly those. Then I moved to a new place and took a job at a firm that does mostly family law, under the understanding that I would be helping them branch out into other areas of law. It's taken a while, but I'm finally getting to a point where I'm doing less than 50% family law now.

Bankruptcy is pretty technical and I wouldn't recommend getting into it without having a supervisor who knows the ins and outs or without doing a lot of learning about it before jumping in. Estate planning is definitely something you could move into without as much of a barrier to entry though.

Estate and guardianship litigation. Chancery work. Estates and trusts. I practiced family law exclusively for the first 12 years of my career and it has become about 5-10% max of what I do now.

Estates and guardianships are easily related, but I don’t do much in those areas because I don’t particularly like it. I handle almost exclusively high conflict divorce/custody so my practice is very litigation centered. Because I do so much family law litigation, it transfers to civil litigation (breach of contract, business disputes, real estate litigation, etc.) and criminal defense work. A lot of my family cases intersect with domestic violence so I do quite a bit of criminal work too.

For the past 3yrs, in addition to family law, I have been practicing general civil litigation (breach of contract, creditor-debtor, business and consumer disputes), real estate litigation, estate litigation, employment law, and immigration. I think what transfers is talking to clients about difficult situations, negotiation, and client management. I'm in the process of transitioning out of family law altogether now.

Family law is about 40% of what I do, with the remainder complex commercial lit, general lit, and employment law. Like what others have said, I feel like being able to deal with client emotions is very transferable, since even though commercial litigation may seem less emotional, there usually are a lot of emotions among the people on the ground. I also feel like the motion practice for both my family law and non-family law benefit each other: family law benefits commercial lit because family law writing needs to concise and straightforward (family law judges have a lot going on so you don't want to waste their time or attention); commercial lit benefits family law because it keeps me sharp, especially when dealing with complex family law issues.
