To protect your "source," engage a contingency-basis attorney to pursue a possible wrongful termination lawsuit. They will contact HR to get your personnel files, including any performance evaluations while you were there. They will also inquire as to the status of the "eliminated" position. This will show you were terminated and the position eliminated on X1 and the position was recreated and filled on X2 by the manager's stepdaughter. If that initial investigation indicates any "cause" for your termination, your case is sunk. If the paperwork indicates you were in good standing prior to the termination, you may have a case. If the manager's girlfriend is also employed in that office, it presents a prima facie case for a pattern of nepotism. Nepotism isn't necessarily illegal, but it is a form of discrimination that might be actionable. Ask the attorney in your initial consultation if your state is an "at-will employment" state and, if so, what are your employment rights. Ask HR, or have your attorney ask HR, if there is any termination policy/procedure, such as requiring verbal caution, written warning, and the opportunity for a Personal Improvement Plan prior to termination. You have a better chance with a large company than with a small operation. Good luck and sorry for your troubles.
It sounds super unethical, like nepotism always does. I'd honestly consider consulting an employment attorney to see if you have grounds for a wrongful termination case. Most of them will work on a contingency basis, so you might as well see if there's anything you can do about it.
There are employment lawyers who will consult for free. I hope they check with one. If there was a contract, severance, or anything it's a possible lawsuit. Though employers don't have to have a reason nor give a reason to fire an employee. Sad but true.
Yea it sucks. But nothing you can do. Move on to the next opportunity. Keep interviewing.
That sounds super shady and honestly unethical. Firing you just to replace you with his stepdaughter the next day? Total conflict of interest. I’d seriously consider reporting it or talking to HR if you haven’t already. You didn’t deserve that.
I sure a heck would call HR. They would have a field day with this
That's a lousy situation and it's all kinds of wrong. But there's probably nothing you can do about it. Your best strategy is honestly to forget about it and forget about those shady characters and go find a better job. You can do better for yourself.
I think the guy did you a favor.. people who hire family and friends VS who is right for the job (or in your case steal the job right out from under you and with no regard to your well being) generally operate breeding toxic work environments which, statistically speaking, will never make it in the long run. Better to get out now and spend time looking for something better
Make sure you get your unemployment $
It amazes me that he fired you without reason and also communicated to you that your replacement will be one of his family. What kind of bussiness relationship is this?
Sadly in most places an employer can fire and no reason needed.
