What has been your biggest flaw when trying to negotiate? I feel like I have always gone in being too wavering and not standing strong in my position but that could just be because I’m trying to get more money and not basing what they come back with on my acceptance.

I do the same thing!

My biggest flaw was giving in the repeated abuse by recruiters for me to give them a range. Now I say “I’m not comfortable providing that at this point but if you want to share the range that is fine.”

If they push back I say “surely you did a market analysis to learn what these roles pay for someone with my experience. If we get later in the process I’m sure we will figure out a way to make it work.”

The problem with giving a range early is that you typically leave money on the table. No recruiter will refuse to advance you because you refuse to give a range during the screen if you are a strong candidate.

My other major flaw is despite having negotiations training from freaking MIT and doing this 30+ times over the span of my 25 year career … I still get nervous. But I can say it gets easier the more you do it. So if you are nervous it just means you’re growing.

Mine has been assuming they are paying me what they can afford to pay me for my experience 😭

I have many options to consider but two options below are what I’m thinking of right now.

I want to see your thoughts on which one I should pick.

Job A: Project Engineer. 135K/yr base. 10% signing bonus.

Job B: Senior Project Manager. Contract. $60/hr standard. $90/hr overtime.

Hello, I worked 1 year as a 'Senior Data Engineer' at 110k base. I then was offered and accepted a role as 'Service Manager' at 155k base where I worked another year. Just recently accepted a 'Data Engineer' job at 155k base but with a larger company (in theory with potential to grow).

I am a Google Certified Professional Data Engineer.

Should I be earning more?

Would I earn more long term if I stayed on as Service Manager?

However, at this same time I was asked to begin working as a supervisor for the engineering team and I would get a promotion at the beginning of the year. I have been supervising and managing our team of 6 for months with no extra pay or bonuses. I was told yesterday that raises will be light this year. Yet today they spare nothing.
