I do the same thing!
My biggest flaw was giving in the repeated abuse by recruiters for me to give them a range. Now I say “I’m not comfortable providing that at this point but if you want to share the range that is fine.”
If they push back I say “surely you did a market analysis to learn what these roles pay for someone with my experience. If we get later in the process I’m sure we will figure out a way to make it work.”
The problem with giving a range early is that you typically leave money on the table. No recruiter will refuse to advance you because you refuse to give a range during the screen if you are a strong candidate.
My other major flaw is despite having negotiations training from freaking MIT and doing this 30+ times over the span of my 25 year career … I still get nervous. But I can say it gets easier the more you do it. So if you are nervous it just means you’re growing.
Mine has been assuming they are paying me what they can afford to pay me for my experience 😭
