These goals are not mutually exclusive, the question is how we help to reach them both.

@Michigan, I think I agree with you. There will always be people who become artists, and bankers, and whatever it is society or/and government nurtures.
If we as educators focus on those critical and analytical skills that teach students to think for themselves, we will be on the right path. I do think a set of core values is needed but…that’s a whole other conversation.

I completely agree with you about core values and morals.
We also need to be teaching Civics!
Education should uplift individuals to higher planes of thinking and doing. If education fulfills that goal, students will reach for the stars, and that benefits everyone as well as the student. Some will find themselves in maths, others in the arts, others in other areas, including hands-on skills. Education should provide everyone with a foundation on which to think for themselves, find their interests and skills, and open the initial path a student wants to take. From there, they take their own journey.

If we uplift students to impact the world the sky’s the limit.

Both.
I think that education has multiple purposes. Students need to be able to financially support themselves, and they also need to be able to explore the things that give them joy. For some, work is joy; for others, artistic or humanitarian endeavors are joy. We must prepare them for gainful work while exposing them to the outside-of-the-box world as best we can.
CHOICES.

Hmmm… Gainful work. That’s an interesting concept. Who decides what is gainful?
