I agree that company culture is important, but it's something that can usually only be known in broad strokes when you're observing it from outside. Some places do have a reputation that's widespread, but for the most part you really have to work somewhere to fully understand the culture. A main thing I try to know about is what the work/life balance is like, and you can usually get a pretty good idea just from doing some research and networking.
For sure culture, direct manager, goals of the company, independent vs. Collaborative role
Work life balance and how management is. I am BIG on boundaries and not taking any work calls or emails before/after hours (unless a true emergency or pre-planned). So I look for companies that can respect that. I also don't want to miss any of my kids sports games so I often leave early to make them. I always make sure to get my work done so if a company can respect my boundaries and not micromanage it would be ideal.
The benefits are really important to me. I'm currently pregnant and seeking a job that offers the benefits I'll need for my new family. Healthcare, time off, and maternity leave. It's all incredibly important, and I never realized it until recently.
