Does anyone work in an area with lots of exterior environmental noise (traffic, concerts, trains, etc.) and have tips for not becoming overwhelmed and/or distracted by it? I’m finding that environmental noise has increased near my office now that tourism has picked back up in my city, and I’m struggling to block it out. I’ve tried earplugs but the noises tend to vibrate my office building so the earplugs don’t work well as an entire block.

Noise cancelling headphones will change your life. I can’t work in the office without mine. I have AirPods Pro and Bose noise cancelling, and both are incredible at removing ambient noise when I’m trying to work. The Bose are slightly better at noise cancellation, but they’re also bulkier and slightly more expensive.

I second the Bose noise cancelling over the ear headphones, best money I ever spent! Got me through law school with several noisy roommates. I've had mine for 4 years and they still work as well as the day I bought them. I usually listen to biaurnal beets playlists or "quiet" or "focus" playlists from Spotify but I also sometimes just turn them "on" with no noise.

I have a white noise sound machine in my both of my offices and they have worked wonders.

In law school I used a variety of “noise” with good headphones - some days white noise worked best, other days brown or pink noise worked better (the different “colors” stimulate your brain differently). Nowadays, I’ll often play a song I like on repeat because it’ll increase dopamine while also limiting the amount of stimulation I’m getting since it’s playing over and over. I definitely recommend testing out multiple different strategies so you have a whole set so you can roll with the ADHD punches!

Ear plugs!

As good as the air pod pros were, the bigger air pod pro max was game changer for the noise cancellation. Also, for when I need to listen to music to stay focused there’s a transparency mode so you can still hear your surroundings if need be.

White noise machine. And real earplugs instead of earbuds or headphones.

Additional Posts in Lawyers with ADHD

After 4 years I want to leave law because of my adhd! I have been to 4 different firms and at each place I feel like I have been “found out”. At every place at least one attorney catches me about my attention to detail. I am so down on myself now. I can’t bring myself to care about small details that I know don’t actually matter. Sitting at a desk all day in word documents is the ultimate form of torture to me. My strengths are talking to people. I am super outgoing. Looking for a new career

What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.
