Coach
Depends on the person
You should adapt to what your direct reports need. I would ask what they need. One of my favorite managers did that.
Mix of both but it depends on the relationship with the person
Can y'all talk to my manager, I can't get them to give me feedback even after asking 😆
Probably not good with difficult conversations, I would ask about specific projects and assignments. How did they think it went etc to break up the ask? A lot of managers, especially newer ones, struggle with the feedback piece as “how am I doing” is super overwhelming. I would recommend much more specific questions and ask them frequently. Flow of information is better than getting it all at YE.
