The real value of a cover letter is that you can highlight things that may not fit into the bare bones resume format. And you can show some personality and demonstrate the ability to communicate. Someone could accomplish a lot with a good cover letter. When people write cover letters that just reiterate what's on their resume, they're wasting that opportunity.
I personally never use a cover letter. Are they still required? Do hiring managers even read them?
If I were you, I'd use Chat GPT to help you write one. I always use Chat GPT to help me come up with a draft of a cover letter (send your resume, and the job description so it knows what to highlight), and then I edit it to sound more like my voice. You can also say, "will you highlight X experience instead of Y?" or things like that to coach it to write the letter you would want.
I would only write a cover letter if it's required or if there's something I need to explain that my resume can't like a gap, location, etc.
Conversation Starter
If it’s an informal cover letter going out via LinkedIn message or email, I always recommend this format:
Hi [name]
I applied to x role with [company] on [date] and wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. [1 sentence introducing yourself and experience, keep it light on buzzwords] + [1 sentence focused on what exactly qualifies you]
[2 sentences on what makes you excited about the role & about company, maybe note willingness to relocate if applicable]
End with invitation to connect like this:
Are you open to a quick chat to discuss the position? I’d love to learn more about it, and share more about my own qualifications. I look forward to hearing from you.
