Order pepper spray from rite aid and put it on your keys. Never stumble home drunk and always make sure you don’t let people into your lobby behind you. Never fall asleep in your Uber/taxi.
Text your group chat when you are back in your locked apartment. Ask them to text you too.

Hi! Asian woman here, been in nyc for 10 years. I’d say it hasnt felt very safe, but also not dramatically less safe than it’s always been. I try to stay vigilant whereever I go, and I bring a pepper spray with me. At night I try to never be alone outside, and have my phone charged always. Build in a uber/cab money part into your budget if you plan on going out at night!
Asian woman here and have been in NYC for 6 years. I am definitely a little more alert these days - staying off my phone while waiting on the subway platform, no subway after dark, sending my location to my SO when I’m ubering, and clutching an alarm whistle when I’m navigating the streets after dark.
I feel completely safe

Agree with the first two responses here. I also take the bus a lot more than I used to (vs the subway) when it’s within a reasonable distance. Feels MUCH safer than the subway these days; even during the day I’ve had some weird subway incidents.
I’m not usually out after 9p or so - and when I am, I take Uber/cab/Lyft. For what it’s worth, my non-Asian and white female friends have been doing this too (many of whom are native NYCers).
Similar thoughts as the first 2 responses. I don’t take the subway after 10:30pm, I am more conscious of where I stand when waiting for the train (my back is against the wall whenever possible), I’m not on my phone while on the train or waiting for a train. I try to stay in train cars that have more people versus an empty car. Buses aren’t exactly the most safe either. A bus driver was stabbed with a razor last night and there’s been other bus violence as of late. I do prefer trains over buses as there’s more opportunity for it to be less packed like sardines (it’s still Covid!)
The stabbing with the razor blade happened in Times Square last night on a tour bus. Like you said, they’re all random.
