They “forgot” to put my name on a piece that was a Cannes finalist. I worked alone, no help, no supervision. Mine was the only name NOT on the entry. My CDs wasted no time adding their names to the entry
This happened to me at a previous shop.
A project I led every damn step of the way.
Oh but my contract was over 2 weeks before launch so fuck me right?
I’ve usually been left off the credits list, which sucks. The few times I’ve been credited it’s because someone who’s still there had to fight tooth and nail for it.
I’ve had to adjust credits after the fact with the award companies and my agency writing a formal letter.
I learned all the way back in the 80s that this was common place when somebody basically resized an award-winning poster at DDB Needham for airport kiosks and his name was put on an award submission. He wasn’t even at the agency when the poster was first published. He won a big award for resizing somebody else’s idea who was no longer at the agency (and had already won awards previously for that idea.) DDBN simply erased the original creatives and dropped this new kids name on the submission.
Now, this kid went on to real fame and creative stardom for his own work. But still, it was an early wake up call for me that when you leave an agency, it’s like Marty McFly’s family when it comes to awards. “Erased from existence!”
Production designers deserve to be listed on awards. But yeah, seems this person wasn’t the original art director and didn’t come up with the idea.
I’ve taken over projects from people who left the agency and I won awards for ideas I didn’t come up with. I’m talking a single slide in a deck, which then I fully fleshed out. So there is some ownership when working on it for months.
But those creatives have been left off award listings. Though I’ve fought for them to be included. Not hard enough, as random names always pop up who did nothing on the project.
I put it on my site and resume and if someone questions it I have the working files to prove it. Never had to deal with something that requires more concrete proof like visa applications etc though so YMMV
It’s tough. You really need someone on the inside, like the awards manager. And yeah… be ready for the vultures
Yeah, it can be tricky sometimes. As a freelancer this has become a default issue for me, haha. Obviously, try and get on those credits. That’s said, as long as you’ve got the receipts to show if someone asks (working files, decks, etc) you’re fine. Getting left of the credits of a project happens to pretty much everyone at some point so only a complete dingus wouldn’t hear you out on the issue.

I left an agency before an awardwinning piece was launched but they credited me because my contribution was undeniable. So if you’re not credited there are two options: people are evil or your contribution was so minor they really forgot.

Yes. Definitely happens.
