What’s one thing you did early on that actually set you apart? Any behavior, decision, or move that changed how people trusted you or gave you more responsibility?

Looking for real examples, not advice you’d give on LinkedIn.

I solved problems. That doesn't seem like rocket science, but you'd be surprised how many people aren't willing to do work that falls into the "not my responsibility" category. I never minded doing those tasks because I'm inquisitive by nature and liked trying my hand at different things. Doing that taught me a whole lot and got me on my then-boss's good side, and that in turn helped open doors for me.

Someone once told me to make something my problem. So I always find something to make my problem and offer a solution that you are in charge of. It shows them that you are invaluable in a sense.

When I was an agency CW, I happily took on projects no one cared about, because of low budgets or subjects that weren’t interesting to a lot of people. Sure, I wanted to pitch Super Bowl like everyone else and did, but I also saw value in giving lower tier projects the same attention. I got more visibility, awards, and promotions with these jobs, and I survived a lot of layoffs because of those clients.

When my manager would assign a task I would deliver it but also suggest other ways to look at it to show i had a POV and was curious. So if I was asked to get from A to B I would deliver that and bring thoughts on the steps needed to get to C

Anticipated needs! Trying to get ahead of asks from my manager. For example, if we had a one off client call scheduled, I’d proactively develop an agenda early. If we had a long weekend coming up, getting ahead on social posts, etc.

Also sharing a recommendation of next steps or a solution when a client shared an ask or I faced an issue. Even if my leads went a different direction, it showed I was thinking through how this task needed to be done

Speaking up in meetings when it was crickets

How do you deal with a manager / junior partner who is always nitpicking and questioning why you did what you did, or telling you what you did is the wrong way to do things? It’s generally prefaced with them only doing this to help you grow, but has the exact opposite effect on me. And then when you try to explain your POV, you’re tagged as being defensive. Generally ends me with saying I’m sorry. No other partners at the firm have ever raised any concerns on my communications or work product.
