When someone comes to me with a complaint about a co-worker or a co-worker’s behavior, I will always ask them if they have spoken directly to that co-worker before coming to me. I detest tattletales and bosses who encourage them. I’m always happy to mediate a conversation between 2 people but I will not ever accuse someone with a secondhand story from someone else.
Obviously there are times when the direct approach can’t be used (harassment, threats, sexually inappropriate behavior, etc.) — but in general, I’ve been so traumatized by meetings that started with the words “I’ve heard that you”…” or “Someone came to me and told me…”
Everyone needs to grow up and handle their own stuff instead of expecting managers to play mommy.
