Directors, DP’s, PD’s The Creative production peeps

When should one confidently say “I am a Director of Photography”? Holding a camera comes with a slew of titles, should those titles be reflective of one’s skill set or a dynamic free for all?

If you’re holding a camera that makes you a camera operator. DoP means you’re running three departments on set - camera, grip and electric. It’s like a writer saying they the creative Director because they wrote something. DoP is a manager. Most DoPs I work with don’t touch the camera they sit in a chair next to the director tweaking looks with the DIT.

Thanks for the reply and your time, if you know of any crews I am definitely open to seeing how bigger productions work. Feel free to message me if you think you could help. I could show you my work, I think it would at least qualify me to hold a c-stand 😂. Also you bringing up the bit about working with directors, it keeps tugging at me when I look at my work, and I feel like that’s what is missing. That collaboration piece where you come up with something better than anyone could have done by themselves.

If anyone wants to join a boutique HR & Talent Advisory consulting firm, Kincentric is hiring for an Associate Partner role! Location doesn’t really matter, but preferably in IL, NY, or ATL.
