Oh also if you have extremely good social skills you can just be “fun to hang out with” and literally know nothing about directing. That’d be my first recommendation.
Let me amplify, because this is a smart question-be good to get more takes. So, one of the consequences of shrinking budgets is a corresponding reduction in the time available for the job. That translates to very pragmatic realities : no pre-light day means you’re holding for g&e on the day. No set build day, means ditto for art- good thing we were waiting for lighting! No rehearsal day means no chance to suss out the script and performance kinks (recent double trouble when recently combined with a flying rig). And, nope, running lines while the actors are in vanity doesn’t count. So, of course, you go through your shooting board and try to spot where the inevitable problems will pop uo. Until, the they do, only they’re way more random and unexpected. And that’s where practice and experience comes in. Especially when it comes to figuring the difference between, “won’t cut” and “can live without.” Sorry to ramble, but this is very top of mind, and if you have tricks to share in addressing, I’m all ears.
You know, I heard that Spielberg’s team
...is so confident they can tell locations to clear 360 degree on a street corner, just land, and figure they can handle it. But that’s them (and his own damn self), and I bet they can.
Thinking ahead.
