When you have started a new job, you kind of view things through rose colored glasses. It’s not until you have been there a few weeks or months to see the true side of things that you realize it’s not all positive. Hindsight is always 20/20. What are some signs that you see in the beginning?

The overall attitude of the rest of the employees. I don't expect people to be giddy at work or anything. No matter how great the store is, at the end of the day, it's still work. But if everyone seems miserable and burnt out, it's usually a sign the entire culture is toxic.

Well I mean I heard hints of dismissal from managers to their reports at this one place. Didn’t end up going there but I did hear that it’s a toxic culture there. On the flip side, I interviewed for my current job and the hiring manager seemed kinda scary - but he ended up being the nicest guy ever!

I once started working for a company and everything seemed pretty normal, but within weeks I realized there was all kinds of intrigue and gossip. It really seemed like people were obsessed with sabotaging each other, and it didn't seem like any of it was worth the effort. I realized there were a few people who were good to avoid, they seemed to be the instigators.

Has anyone ever asked to renegotiate their salary after starting a job? I’m 2 months into my new job and I have far more responsibilities than what I was told. It’s a lot different than what was relayed in the posting and during the interviews. Additionally, they hired my counter part in as a senior manager which is at least $30k more than what I make. My peer has more experience so I expect that but I feel that I should be paid more, however I don’t want to leave a bad impression… any advice?
