Why are support staff so rude and lazy? Barely try to get assignments in on time and complain when an attorney is too hard on them. Support stuff used to be so helpful about 5 years ago. What happened? What are your thoughts?

Used to work as a legal assistant about 5 years ago, and now work as an attorney, so I feel like I can chime in.

I feel like part of it is that support staff tend to feel under appreciated. Some of the attorneys I worked for were never in the office, whereas I was required to be in all the time, which sucked, so when I felt like they didn’t care at all about me and already made way more money than I did, I felt less motivated to work hard for them. However, the attorneys I worked for that got to know me personally, didn’t give me fire drills, and respected my work life balance were ones I worked the hardest for. So maybe you could try to work on getting to know your support staff more or take them out for coffee? Just a thought.

We are overworked for what we are paid. Attorneys treat us either like furniture and ignore us, or scream at us for things we don't control. Our emails and reminders are ignored until a deadline is missed, and that is our fault. We are blamed when something goes wrong, but get zero credit for any success the team or office has. We are treated like we are disposable and interchangeable, except that you can't actually run a law firm without us.

If you want me to put your assignments ahead of the other 25 I have backed up, appreciate us. Bring us coffee. Talk to us like people. Also, if every staff member seems to be lazy and rude, maybe think about what (and whom) all those interactions have in common. Just saying.

I triple this post! Well said. Attorneys, just appreciate your staff that’s all we really want. And maybe some good free coffee and a thank you from time to time!

@Senior para: or maybe we didn’t time and/or money for law school!

They're probably underpaid. I've never known anyone to go above and beyond when they're underpaid 🤷🏼‍♀️

For Plaintiff's attorneys, how big is your caseload? What kind of cases are the majority of them and are they in suit? I am currently handling 150+ mostly MVAs and premise liability cases, just about all in suit, (on top of about 10 DUIs and other small traffic matters) and I feel like I'm drowning and looking to jump ship. What’s a good LA or NY business litigation firm and salary to expect? I’m a 2yr with quite frankly a lot of experience across civ rights, PI, excessive force, wrongful death, employment defense, K dispute, corp. structure dispute, professional licensure. In house or M&A/Real Estate Transactional are likely the end goal but want to get the litigation out of me first.

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

I’m a 3L applying in NYC for post grad employment. Which plaintiffs PI/Med firms have the best opportunities for a junior? Everything I find, including my past summer job, is a small shop with 3 partners max and a handful of established associates. I would really like plaintiffs side.

I’ve done PI work my entire career for over 10 years. I’ve worked in state and federal courts and I’ve traveled around the country doing MDL work and bellwether trials. I’ve had a lot of success making the idiots I’ve worked for wealthy, but I’m still waiting for a moment where I enjoy what I’m doing. I feel stuck working in dysfunctional plaintiff firms/cultures. I hate this profession/career more and more each year. Has anybody been successful breaking off on their own in recent years? Advice?

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)
