Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?

You’re asking us why your friends are not getting hired at one of the worst times for job hunters and blaming it on DEI?!
Your mention of DEI and “female bosses” sounded like blaming. I’m sure your friends have great resumes, it’s not female bosses’ fault, it’s just a bad time for the industry.
Lmao I don’t think this is DEI, I think hiring is slow and competition is fierce
Lol yeah, it's fierce tbh - collecting everyone's thoughts for a research now
Bit anecdotal to be drawing broad conclusions, isn't it?
analyzing data and making inferences - but again, this post is just to get everyones pov not to start a trade war
The problem is you and your friends are not as good as the others applying, DEI initiatives may be helping giving more qualified people an opportunity to also be considered, but in any case, y'all aren't as good as you think.
Bold of you to assume it’s just men who aren’t being hired. From what I hear almost everyone is having a rough time.
Everyone is struggling to find a job. Nothing to do with DEI.

“Females” are for dogs and donkeys. Cut it out.

Most agencies would prefer to hire someone other than a white guy if there’s a good option. Welcome to post 2020 Canada.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve worked at big and small agencies and the middle and top are mostly white guys still. The bottom, sure, those are filled with more people of colour, but the ones making the decisions are still mostly white men.
Rising Star
It’s the unspoken truth of the industry.
Hot take. Many agencies see diversity as hiring white women leaders instead of white male leaders. Every time I see a strategy article about an all female leadership team (which is a great thing btw) 9/10 times all those women are white.
Its to balance out all the white men in the creative department.
“I’m all for diversity BUUUUUUUT”
Going against the grain here, but I've witnessed it myself.
At a boutique shop I used to work at, the partners were notoriously known for hiring women because in their words found them easier to work with.
Another agency owner insisted on only hiring "attractive" women in account roles.
And another place, my CD was told by their boss they should hire more females on the team.
“Females”, “guys” mmmmmh….
Advertising, in general, I’ve noticed is become more and more female-dominated industry. Maybe in the leadership level it’s still mostly all males but every other role I see is usually all females now, and I think slowly they’re also making their way into the top leadership positions too.
@ECD1 and AD2
That’s my experience and I’m telling what I’ve seen in ALL the agencies I’ve been in, echoing OP’s observation
Sure, happens all the time. Especially if current team is white dude heavy.
