That's not an uncommon scenario, and it shouldn't come as a surprise to the manager. Companies typically pay new hires better than long-term employees, it's how they attract new talent. Plus, loyal employees, in today's corporate world, tend to be taken for granted and pigeonholed. This phenomenon is so common there's a term for it, wage inversion.
agree, i think everyone knows at this point that the longer you stay at a company, the less you make than the job hoppers. most of my career has been job hopping (at my 11th company) now after 24 years of working full-time.
This happened to me at my last company, and it was awkward. The best I could do was keep working as normal and try to ease the tension. At the end of the day, it’s not your fault—that’s on HR.
