OH paralegal here. Most of the attorneys I worked for have started in ID then transitioned into PI but that was back when ID paid really well here in OH. In the several years there has been a shift to in-house counsel and the pay isn't as good (for starting your own firm). A lot will depend on you state (at fault vs. no fault) and what the landscape looks like with regard to pay. If you want to start your own firm someday, pay is something you need to consider as far as putting $$ away for start up costs and avoiding loans and/or taking on partners, if that's something you want to avoid
Work for a reputable PI firm that litigates and will pay you a split of cases you generate.

I think you learn more doing ID. You’ll be doing the same work, just from the future opposing side’s perspective which gives you an advantage
If you want to own your own firm, you want trial experience. So I would try and go to a firm that you know actually tries cases and you’ll be able to do that.
