I bowed out of a couple of positions there because the base was too low and I didn’t want so much of my compensation to come from stocks. Hard for us who have higher base salaries (but comparatively less bonus/RSU) to transition to a model where your regular paycheck is lower. Feels like a pay cut despite the higher TC…
I don’t think their recruiters got that memo.

L6 is a broad range and people can come in with 10 YOE+. MBAs come in at very bottom of pay band, you’d probably come in at least in middle so with updated bands they should meet your bcg comp (but benefits much worse). It’s not really a waste as you’ll get a higher band—probably on par or maybe even higher than your peers who joined directly (most of whom are still L6).
There’ve been a few ppl coming in at L7 from mgr level lately—but almost all on non-tech and even then it’s hard. L7 you are either a topic expert as an IC (or small team manager) OR you manage a very large team as a sr. Mgr (10+ mgrs and ICs under you) both of which are tough to pull off as a PL as your experience wouldn’t make you ready for that, even more so for technical roles as that’s not what bcg consultants do.
Promotions are really more accomplishments based vs. time based at Amazon after L6, so it’s very different vs bcg where you get one every 24 months as long as you perform OK. For L7 you need a lot of accomplishments and that’s somewhat correlated with time—not always. For some people they never get there and stay at L6. You’ll probably have a faster ramp to L7 vs. peers but moreso because you can operate on a more senior level and get more stuff done—but still likely 2 years minimum.
Thank you so much!! This is super thoughtful and thorough.
For reference current comp is ~300k+ all in guaranteed. Potential for another 50+k for performance.
Amazon bases are typically on the lower end - most of the comp comes as part of RSUs
