4th year associate. I’m getting good mentorship on a fair amount of my projects, but every once in a while, I’m asked to work on something without any partner in my practice area supervising. I typically know what to do but can’t help but feel like I’m doing the wrong thing because no one is giving me orders and am also paranoid. Should I run with it and just take it as a good sign?

Yes, and also don’t be afraid to ask questions. Recognize what you don’t know and get guidance on those pieces. You’re trusted enough to have some independence but reach out to folks in your practice group if you have questions on specific points. You got this!

I’m a fourth year associate and have an entire caseload (about 100 clients) without any partner support. I handle all of my own cases and make all decisions myself. Partners will answer questions if I have them, but I haven’t been given orders from a partner on a case since my first few months of practice. It can be tough at first, but just embrace it!

The lack of a partner on the file is your firm showing confidence in you! No more orders! Take initiative but swim back to safe waters to ask questions when you need to. Good luck!

Question on UK visa-
My partner will be traveling often to London, once a month for an year starting September. He is getting his visa through work (10 years, multiple entry, 6 months max stay, cost some $1000).

I have applied for standard tourist visa in the past and they are usually short term. It could be max 6 months, but they see your itinerary and allocate you few months around the itinerary

Is there a way to get 6 months multiple entry visa, if I were to join him once in a while.

I joined pwc last month, and absolutely hating it here. Each weekend has been working, 12-15 hours work day is minimum expectation. And there's extreme hierarchy, where even after you spend 24 hours working on something, the director decides he wants something completely different and you delete and restart. (Note that you request them to review and give their pov earlier on, but they never take the time out)

Working at a boutique transactiona firm. First year did not receive much guidance and made a few errors, one of which could have been a deal but ended up being fine but overall I worked hard, billed hours above target and showed a willingness to learn. Three main partners in the group. I feel like I may have been written off by the one partner, still get a fair amount of work from another and the third has never really given work but has a rep for doing things alone or using seniors. I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?
