Rising Star
My previous firm did not take my exit well. Basically iced me out - the partners didn’t send me a single email or give me a single call after I gave notice. They even tried to retaliate by sending direct emails to associates at my new firm trying to poach them (unsuccessfully). I was the second associate to leave in a month and I left them in a bad spot, they still haven’t replaced us. There are a few associates I would still be friendly with now though that I left on good terms with, but not supervisors.
Yes! Your network is your biggest asset. Any one of those ex colleagues could be a future in house client. And also, you’re allowed to have friends.

Yes. Doing happy hour with a couple of the paralegals at my old firm soon (:
You know partners that use WhatsApp? 🤯
My prior firm and I realized we were not the right match for each other. It was a really difficult decision for both me and the firm because I had been there for many years. The partner offered to have a monthly zoom conference to check-in and we’ve been doing that for over a year now.
It was kind of awkward at first, but I’m a solo now. So, it’s nice to have someone I can ask questions to - even though we are technically competitors now.
We always got along well as long as weren’t dealing with firm business. I actually talk to her more (via that once a month zoom check-in) than I did many months when I was with the firm since I ran my own department there and was pretty much left to run it unless there was an issue.
This is the ideal mentorship/professional relationship. Cheering someone on, even if it means they have to move on from firm. Just gave notice to my mentor, and I wish there was more of this instead of anger and resentment about my departure.
I still text the managing attorney at my last job all the time. We are super close. Probably helped that I worked for her as an intern through law school (public interest) and left for a firm after graduation that had career growth opportunity so she totally understood and was encouraging
