A couple of weeks ago, I called out because everything else in the area (Dallas, TX) was mostly shut down due to icy, dangerous roads. I live 25 miles out from my hospital and don't do ice. Patients weren't even coming in! Why the pressure to risk a $500 deductible and a hospital stay for a shift? I love my job, but I’m not a martyr. Does your facility actually support safety, or just expect you to risk your life?

We tend to be pretty accommodating when it comes to perilous weather. You're right, there's no need to risk one's life on the road. Still, some roles will be considered mission critical, and the person is expected to get there no matter the difficulties. I don't recall it ever becoming a big issue, as most people really do make a valiant effort to get in if at all possible.

Patients not even coming in says a lot. If the community is staying home because it is unsafe, staff should be allowed to do the same without being shamed. Loving your job doesn't mean you owe it your health or your life.
