You can. It’s called “having boundaries.”
Some of you people act like it’s just so easy for everyone to do this if they want to and like this person is making the choice to not have time for their family. Not everyone’s work places are flexible or understanding and not everyone is in a position to just leave their job and find a new one or move if they’re unhappy with it. So just let them vent and be sympathetic that they aren’t as lucky as you
The thing is nothing will change if this person doesn’t speak up for themselves. And when nothing changes, go higher up the chain. If nothing happens then, it’s time to seek another job. This person is obviously desirable or they wouldn’t be working their tails off or hired in the first place so it’s possible to find another job. If spending time with your family is important to you, you need to speak up. If there is retribution due to speaking up, then this person is working on a terrible team. Bottom line.
To those concerned... I went home and played with my girl today... I let her stay up till 8:30 too. It was refreshing. Still gonna work till 2 or 3 but those 2 hours were real nice.
So glad to hear that 💕
I do this, except replace the wine and 8 hours of sleep with talk to my wife for 15 minutes, work from the basement for 3 hours, and 6 hours of sleep.
I don't sacrifice the time with my kids though.
I get the morning with my daughter. About 7 till I drop her at daycare at 9:30. It’s all i have and I’m on calls for at least an hour of it every day.
Also, I did it once a week when I was staff. Because it’s worth so much more to me than my paycheck and it helps me remember why I grind.
My team knew that I’m out the door at 4:30 on Tuesdays. Every week. Because it’s important. Make it a priority and your team will understand.
PwC is the same way don’t do it
If you have reasonable people on your team ask for a flex day. Maybe WFH that day so you don’t have to commute and end your workday by 6.
I’m sorry that sucks

Take a mental health day. I’m seriously worried about you.
I’m worried about me too.
Coach
You can def do that except for a couple weeks, this isn't banking at the end of the day (especially for the pay we get).
Do you work this much year round?
I’ve been here 10 months... fall season was nothing like this. If I thought I’d be able to start sleeping at midnight in a week or two, it would really go a long way. My days are 3-5 hours on the phone and the rest admin. Around 7 I can start actually doing work. I’m way behind even working till 3. I’m behind on every client. Bosses say they will pick up the slack and then none is picked up a week later and I’m in a deeper hole. This may be the first time in 10 years I miss a deadline.

Seriously though, when I was at EY it was the same. My managers didn't care about seeing their kids so why should I see mine? I lasted a little over a year.
Well at my firm we work hard but have some flexibility. And we also aren’t working on clients deducting horse expenses haha. So you can find balance at the right place.
What the heck group are you in? I read about your hours - That’s crazy! I know we’re in busy season but there still has to be some balance. I leave work at 4 get my kid from school, home, dinner, play, and he’s in bed by 8. During busy season and for deadlines (like 4 months of the year?) I’ll WFH after he goes to bed. I try to get myself to bed by 10 but will work til midnight, very rarely last midnight. Otherwise I’m useless the next day. Make sure people are aware of your workload and how much your doing, especially if your working for a few different people above you. I can tell you as a SM I tend to be clueless unless someone tells me. I try to watch out to not burn out teams but sometimes I get lost in all my deadlines. Not sure your specifics, but don’t be afraid to speak up
Working someplace flexible is nice. I am at work by 5:30am, pretty much always gone by 6 M-F. Usually do 6am - 2 pm on Saturdays, I don't work Sundays. Usually get 6.5-7 hours of sleep.
Starting the day earlier (for me at least) gives me time with my wife and kids every night, but with the schedule I still get in around 70 hours a week, with having one day off.
Hey it's all true, even have a 45 minute commute each way. Hopefully one day it all even pays off and my effective hourly rate will be greater than that of an average truck driver.
I work in industry so I can do whatever I want. Get in at 9...lunch. Am I tired? Go home at 3. Switch
That’s why you leave !
Why don’t you?
This is why I left B4 - I couldn't get balanced. I'm at a small firm now and the above is standard 9 months of the year and pretty close to reality in busy season.

I consistently go home at 5:30 and leave my laptop at the office most days, it’s not impossible to have a life while in PA.
Just go home, set bounties it’s on you to make it happen. The work will be allocated to others if it needs to get done.
Suck up to the partners in your group. They definitely play favorites. Get on their side and your work load will be smooth sailing.
