A restaurant offered me a trial shift unpaid. They said it’s standard. I’m unsure if I should agree or push back. What do people usually do in this situation?

I have had people come in for a trial shift and always paid them.. it's work and you should be paid for it. I wouldn't trust any employer that would not pay for a trial shift. If they do things like that there would be other things expected without pay. Big red flag!

It’s common practice in fine dining and upscale restaurants. It’s called a stage. It’s basically an audition for the role you applied for to showcase your skills. It helps weed out people who exaggerate or lie on their applications and ask for more money because they say they can cook. We have you sign a waiver, and we feed you during the stage as well.

Totally agree w executive sous chef! I own a company with lasers for skin resurfacing - takes skill, technique, and artistry. When I’m asked to trust (on paper) a new esthetician / tech, know basic laser and skin care techniques, I need them to AUDITION. There are NO PAID auditions. Why go through all the paperwork, time and energy when I can tell right away if they lied in their resume or they’re experienced. If applicants are serious about their skills they should eagerly want to show them off. Also, they get to see if the business is worth THEIR energy. 2 hours (in my case) -4 hours (restaurant) should be enough to know for both parties.

"Trials" are usually what the 90 day probationary period is for, isn't it ? But even during those 90 days, companies still pay their employees. But employees are still on payroll. Personally I would not work for free unless I knew it was a volunteer job like working at a library doing community service. A JOB is NOT community service !

Don’t do it any decent venue will pay you for your trial time

Any company who wants me to work for free, calling it a "trial run" is saying "I don't trust that you will be good enough to pay"... like judging a book by its cover... or judging a person based on past job history from 10 years ago. People change in 10 years... personalities change, work ethics change... if an employer doesn't want to trust me enough to pay me, they are not worth working for in the first place. Don't let an employer waste your time or your effort. Chances are they won't decide to keep you on anyway.

There's nothing wrong with that it's good practice and shows willingness. Also you can see if you like it.

Absolutely NOT STANDARD!

A stage is only appropriate if the place seats 300 or more a night

Why?

It is standard in fine dining restaurants but only for 2 hours during service. Do not do it for a sports bar and only do it if you want the job of course.
