I always think it's a red flag if someone in a job interview says that a company is "like a family." If it's literally a family, that can be a whole truckload of red flags. I've known people with stories similar to yours, family tensions become workplace dramas and it's awful for anyone working in that kind of atmosphere. You're smart to move on.
This sounds so much like my MIL telling me I'm like a daughter to her. However, knowing how she treats her daughter...
Same thing.
Or when the boss in a small business starts dating one of the coworkers. Need I say the company is not more.
Good on you for getting out of there. I have no patience for that kind of dysfunction at work. I won't write off small businesses entirely, but if given the choice, I'm always steering away from the family run companies specifically because of things like this.
I walked away from that type of situation years ago. I resigned the same week I started. Setting boundaries is a MUST!
I’ve worked 17 years in a family-owned company that truly did treat employees like family. It was genuine, not a slogan.
But as the company grew, the reality changed. All that was left were the echoing words of “we treat you like family,” without the substance behind them.
It taught me that the phrase only matters when the actions stay consistent — growth shouldn’t silence what once made the culture meaningful.
