I mean we really don’t know much at the end of the day lol obviously there’s a line they older employees shouldn’t cross though
Ehh I'm in my late 30s and I was talked down to by another software engineer at my old company, so I don't think it's an age thing so much as a person thing. My way of shutting him down was I knew my stuff and put forth what I knew in a professional manner.
I look very young and I’m a woman in a male heavy field, so I do tend to experience a lot of talking down to when I first roll onto a new project/role. But in my experience when you show you’re good and competent they respect you and the backlash stops.
I’ve never felt really talked down to. If you can show you’re somewhat competent I’ve found people are very willing to give me tasks traditionally outside of my comfort zone and get a lot of respect for executing on those over the last year since joining out of college
Not necessarily talked down to but a lot of jokes about being younger. It’s obviously not a secret you’re younger and less experienced. Over a short time period (6 months), I’ve been able to build my brand and earn respect from everyone I work with.
My two cents, determine if your colleague crossed the line and address it immediately, or take some time to prove your maturity and professionalism.
