If you are passionate about your job, it’s respected. If you make 6 figures, it’s respected. If you have a CPA, it’s respected. You can get all of that from being an auditor. If you’re not passionate about the day to day thing, you can be passionate about the people and the growth. I’ve grown a lot (in my perspective) as an auditor. You get to ask a lot of questions and understand processes from end to end as a job. You get to be right a lot too! Ofc, if you’re gonna say “but a lawyer/doctor can do these and has these things”...then that’s your problem to fix. Stop comparing. If you hate your job, then do something you’re proud of.

No reason to be insecure about your career. Success is measured in many ways and you referred to a few.
CPAs are among the most trusted and respected professions in the world. I get it that people like to make accountant jokes. But at the end of the day our profession 8s highly respected.
Money? My only friend who make more than me are other accountants. I have a sibling who is a physician. I make more than twice his income. I have friends who are lawyers and if they are partners our comp is similar. I have friends who are C level executives in private industry and I make more than all of them. One guy made a 7 million pop on options and an IPO but over the last 30 years I have earned more than him in the aggregate.
Bottom line, chin up and be proud!
What size firm are you at out of curiosity?
I Am more embarrassed about how much I make because when people hear I’m a CPA, they think I make zillions🙄

I actually never felt that way when I was in public, since everyone around me was in accounting/tax. But when I left for industry and started working for a tech firm, whenever someone asks me what my role is and I tell them, most of them either lose interest or have no idea what accounting is, and some would even ask “isn’t that super boring?” So yeah I have also felt a little bit embarrassed and the profession devalued. Depends on how much you care and whether you are happy with the profession yourself.

Lol fr! I make less than all my friends.... That would be fine if I didn't work more hours than they do.... And then I think, its fine, I'll catch up....but they just keep expanding that gap...
