Yes at 3 months, 6 months, 11 months and 13 months. All times it was perfectly fine. It was easier when younger. Wake them before the nil by mouth time to feed them so you don’t have complaints all morning and try and book the first surgery time if you can. Hoping for the best for you and your little one!
Yes at 6 months. I was terrified and the dr told me it’s actually safer for children that young than adults to have anesthesia (???) he was fine. He was hoarse afterward from the tubes down his throat which broke my heart but they said it can happen and he recovered in a few days. The hardest part was taking him in at 4am not being able to feed him, and then the surgeon was an hour late. The stress of having to hold, but not be able to FEED, my screaming baby to keep his stomach empty for anesthesia FOR HOURS from 3-6am was way worse than the anesthesia or surgery itself. And just seeing him afterward with tape and tubes stuck on him was also hard. But holding him after felt so so good. 💕 Sending you good wishes. It’ll be ok.
My son had surgery at 11 and 18 months of age, no issues. Much easier than when he was 5
You don’t have to sedate them - there’s an anesthesiologist who does it
Just bringing a little levity to a stressful time - good luck
My son had general anesthesia around 3-4 months. I was stressed out imagining them holding him down to insert the IV but it turns out they give them knock out gas first. 🤦♀️ I don’t know why they don’t do that for adults too.
Overall it went smoothly and we had no issues after he woke up. Standard clingy/sad baby for a day.
My boys both went under general anesthesia for MRIs at around 6 months. Were definitely nervous about it and it was hard for us to see them out like that, but it all went fine and the docs were fantastic. Anesthesiologists seem to have the best bedside manner and sense of humor of anyone in the medical field in my experience
My daughter had surgery at 3 months. No issue, she woke up, acted almost normal within hours. Was kept overnight for observation. They were going to release her in the AM but she did throw up around 10am (they said was a normal post-anesthesia side effect) and that prompted them to keep her a few hours longer. But she bounced back like nothing happened with the exception of that one incident. Craniectomy at 3 months. Then another at age 2 for an inguinal hernia. She’s a champ. My mother recently had thyroid surgery and had a harder time recovering.
LA. Infant surgery was at CHOC and the latter was at UCLA.
My son had surgery at 3 months. Zero issues but he was fussy that night.
Yes, my son has had quite a few MRIs and they were all sedated until he turned 6. They did all turn out fine, they’re a bit wobbly after though so after you wait for them to come to, they can’t walk on their own for a couple of hours.
My son hates needles of any type so he now gets his MRIs fully awake. The deal was either stay still for the MRI or get an IV stuck in.
My second went under general anesthesia at 6 months old and again at 14 months old for minor surgical procedures. The first was nbd, the second he took a bit more time to fully oxygenate on his own but this was expected (had a mild respiratory infection during surgery and was getting ear tubes).
He’s almost 3 now and outside of the beneficial impacts of both surgeries there’s no impact. He’s a moving ball of chaos 😊
