USI Insurance brokerage and consulting - thoughts? A recruiter reached out to me via linked in and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this company. They seem to have decent reviews on Glassdoor but I was hoping to get more insight into workload and comp. Thanks in advance! USI

Are you currently working at a shop or insurance carrier? Our company is gradually phasing out auto estimators due to AI and shop written estimates. I did auto for over 15 years and I've always been told that if you dont learn the injury side then you won't move up in the company. But I have always been on the physical damage side and never even handled a claim. I had to step back and start an entry level claims handling which in my opinion has been the most stressful of all jobs in my lenghty time working here. I did that for a year and then went to injury for 6 months. Doing those two made me realize how important it was for my internal resume. It helped me gain skills to investigate and analyze. With that I went over to special lines to handle RV, motorcycle and boat claims. I have seen team members with similar path as me go into commercial, home or fire and theft. It's a great gig in my opinion but not knowing anything about those products was the biggest hurdle. It took my first year to get the hang of it. There was a good learning curve with my company. On the other hand the job interview had very little to do with what you know about boats or rvs. It was more geared towards how you prioritize, collect and analyze data.
I dont feel there is much money in underwriting. At least not in personal lines. My neighbor does underwriting for specialty and the ultra rich insuring jewelry, super cars and yatchts worth over million dollars. That is were you'd make the most as far as underwriting. She makes about 90k.
I work on the carrier side now. Thinking also about process/product manager. Would like to do something internal and learn a different side of the business/less customer facing. I guess you make a good point that alot of times it’s not always what you know but being able to communicate, multi task, and analyze.
It souds like you have a lot of great experience. Are you able to shadow other jobs at your company and see what you might be interested in? That is something i Have done in the past that was very helpful.
Yes definitely able to shadow other jobs- just unsure what sounds most interesting. I think my skills would translate well to SIU, Quality assurance, or process management. Process management requires a lot of experience, SIU seems to be mostly prior law enforcement and quality seems to be the most tenured folks. So part of me thinks I need some more experience under my belt. I’m a higher performer and enjoy doing a good job. So I believe I could do well at anything just might need some more training than most folks. To me as a former manager that attitude sometimes is better than experience. But just depends on the manager and the need. Any further thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks for responding
